'Miss Ashford! Miss Ashford!' Laura looked over her shoulder and saw the hotel receptionist wave her over. A tall handsome police officer stood next to the desk, notepad in hand.
'Yes? Is there something wrong?' Laura asked as she walked over to the desk.
'I'm sorry, miss Ashford, but one of the hotel guests has disappeared.' the police officer said.
'Oh I'm sorry to hear that.' Laura said, seemingly shocked. 'Who is it?'
'Maxwell Garridan. The 18 year old son of mister and misses Garridan, who were staying on your floor.'
'Ah yes. They've two sons, don't they? I think I've shared a lift or two with them during my stay.'
'That is them, miss Ashford. Unfortunately, Maxwell has gone missing since last night. He stayed behind in the hotel as his older brother Anthony and his parents went out for Anthony's graduation ceremony. Have you noticed anything?'
'I haven't I'm afraid. I had an early night, due to some long meetings I had yesterday. Don't the security camera's show where he is gone?'
'I'm afraid not, miss Ashford. Due to some very bad timing, the security system was briefly down for a software update. It was only a few minutes, but it seems that this was enough for Maxwell to vanish.'
'I see. And he can't have tried to leave the hotel to find his brother and parents and got lost in the city?'
'It is an possibility, so we are searching the streets as we speak.'
'Well, that is disconcerting. I do hope you find him. And if I can think of anything, can I call you?' The police officer nodded and handed her a phone number.
'Oh miss Ashford?' the receptionist asked politely as Laura moved to go upstairs. 'The room next to you has complained about some loud noise. Presumably you left your television on? Would you be so kind as to turn it down ever so slightly?'
'Of course, no problem.'
Laura reached her hotel room, at the end of the corridor. She opened the door, careful as to not knock off the 'do not disturb' sign and walked into the room. On the bed, a young boy lay heavily trussed up, moaning loudly into his gag. His fear filled eyes widened as she stood before him.
'Hello wittle Maxie boy. I'm back!' she smiled as the boy pleaded unintelligibly into the wadding she had stuffed into his mouth. 'I've got great news: we are going home tomorrow! Well, I'm going home and I'm taking you with me. I've got a lovely nursery with your name on it at home, all ready for you. But unfortunately, you've been a little bit too loud whilst I was in town, so I'm going to shut you up a bit more thoroughly.' And with one fluent motion, she pulled away the single piece of extra strength tape that held his gag in.
She then proceeded in stuffing Max's mouth with as much wadding as she could. When she could fit no more into his mouth, she began wrapping his entire lower head in layers and layers of the same tape, pulling each loop as tightly as possible and smoothing it out, before continuing. She alternated between going around the back of his head and going over the top of his head, pulling his jaw tightly shut. When two dozen layers of tape covered Max's head, she tossed away the roll and reached over to her bag. From there, she pulled a leather muzzle head harness. Max's tear filled eyes got wide again and he tried to move away from her, but it was no use: soon the muzzle covered most of his head and she pulled all straps as tightly as possible. And lastly, she produced a thick leather helmet. It was completely closed, apart from two tiny nostril holes, providing the boy with much needed oxygen. She pulled the laces on the back of the hood tight, before covering the knot with the leather collar, which was attached to the helmet. Three broad straps were pulled tight over the boy's eyes, around his heavily gagged mouth and underneath his chin, silencing him even more. Laura locked them with small padlocks, as well as the collar, before carefully lowering Max down onto the floor. And as she got ready and eventually climbed into bed, she noticed with a smile the almost non existing moaning that escaped from underneath the hood.
'...that is all taken care off. I hope you had a pleasant stay with us.' The receptionist said warmly.
'I did, thank you so much. Did they find the missing boy, by any chance?'
' No. Not yet. But they have got some leads down at the docks, so there is still hope.'
'Good to hear it. Now, would it be possible for someone to help me with my bags?'
'Absolutely. Michael, if you could...' And as the concierge carefully picked up each bag, Laura couldn't help but think that they had never been closer in finding Maxwell Garridan, who now lay bound, blindfolded, gagged, hooded and bagged in the trunk of her car.
